What is a Bush Fire Management Committee?
A Bushfire Management Committee (BFMC) provides a forum for cooperative and coordinated bushfire management in a local area.
The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai BFMC is responsible for preparing, coordinating, reviewing and monitoring the Bush Fire Risk Management Plan for the Local Government Areas of Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai.
This BFMC consists of a range of stakeholders such as land managers, fire authorities and community organisations that ensures the whole community has a say on bushfire management activities.
What is Bush Fire Risk Management Planning?
Bushfires are an integral and important part of the Australian environment. Bush fire management in NSW is a cooperative effort of the whole community and involves a mixture of actions and strategies to minimise the potential for bush fire to affect life, property and the environment.
To assist in bush fire management, BFMCs prepare Bush Fire Risk Management Plans.
The work an individual does to prepare their property also plays a critical role in bush fire management. No matter what broader strategic measures are taken, if your property is not prepared then embers will find somewhere to land and cause spot fires
What is the Bush Fire Risk Management Plan?
A Bush Fire Risk Management Plan is a comprehensive document that maps and describes the level of bush fire risk across an area; it identifies the assets at risk, and establishes treatment options to safeguard those assets and areas. The plan is used to determine such things as where mechanical clearing or hazard reduction burns are conducted, which areas require specialised fire protection, and which areas need to be targeted for community education.
